Deeper into the woods they
went, as the sun set further. It was almost dark, when in the distance, she saw
a glimmer of sparkling light. It wasn't just the color of firelight, but shades
of purple, rose, gold, silver, deep royal green and bright yellow and
blue! How amazing it all became as she got closer! Wonderful rays of light
glowed along a path lined with the tiniest little flower pots she had ever seen.
Each pot was decorated fancy, and different from each other. Out of each pot
grew little plants. In another corner of this area, were piles of beautiful
round pieces of stones that looked like glass. They were swirled with iridescent
colors of every hue, but when Jilla held one up to the rays of the light, she
could see through it, and it turned a deep sapphire blue! How beautiful
everything looked! "Where are we?" she asked Py. "Who do you suppose owns all
of this? It must belong to someone!"
She gently lifted a pot and looked at it carefully. Then, without
disturbing anything further, she set it back down, just as she had found it. How
magical this all seemed! While she was taking in all of this beauty, her little friend had
been on a search of his own. Much to her surprise, Py came racing down the
pot-lined path, with a tiny little person riding on his back! When he stopped at
her feet, the wee person hopped off of the rat's back and made a deep,
respectful bow to the young girl. Stooping down, she said, in a whisper, "How do you do? My
goodness, you are so little...what are you?"
"Well," replied the little person, in a tiny voice, "I suppose
you would call me a fairy...but a lot of things are called fairies...we
do have elfins here too...and gnomes and sprites, silkies, broonies,
undines, and more! " "Fairies and elfins, and more!" exclaimed Jilla. "I have heard
stories of tiny ones like you, but I never believed, for one moment, that
fairies were real...but so you are!" The small fellow laughed and replied, teasingly, "And we,
in the forest, have all heard tales of beings so large, that even their big toe
would cover us! Of course, we never believed these tales, not for one moment,
but you are real...yes, you are!" They both laughed. "What a fine friend you have," said the little man, stroking Py.
"He seems very different from the animals we ride here in the woods. Does he
have a name?" Jilla picked up the rat and said, "His name is Py, and he is truly
my very best friend. I am glad you think he is special, for he really is. He's
very bright and he is a good protector, even though he is small." "I can see," said the fairy, "that you hold great love for this
animal, but I say to you again, there is something quite different about him. I
can feel it." Jilla held Py close to her face and looked into his eyes. She
smiled, and thought she almost saw him smile back! Kissing him on the head, she
gently lowered him to the ground. "Yes," she agreed, "He's very special,
indeed." She examined the little fairy as he stood, watching Py walk about.
What an odd little creature! He was very delicate in stature, and his clothing
was light and wispy, flowing gracefully in the mild breeze. He had wings, but at
that very moment, they appeared to be closed and up against his back. She
wondered what they looked like when they were opened. Perhaps she would be
allowed to see. "Do you fly?" she asked curiously. "I see that you have wings,
but can you actually fly?" The little one puffed out his chest, and spread his glorious
wings, strutting about like a peacock. "Can I fly?" he answered. "Can I
FLY? I can indeed fly! I have the best set of wings in this part of the
woods! See how sturdy they are, but how light and delicate they look. See the
beautiful colors and how they swirl about in each section. Yes, yes! I can fly!"
And with those proud words, he quickly shot up into the air, fluttered around
her head, stopped in mid-flight, then swooped and darted about the trees, and
pots and Py and anything else that was there. Jilla giggled and ducked as the
little fairy showed off his unusual flying skills. All photographs and The Jillandra Book-A Fairy Tale are
