Mystifying Elf Stuff

Roaming about the forest had never been more fun for Jillandra. Around every tree, behind each bush or rock, she discovered a new little friend doing something magical. It was so peaceful, and quiet. There were no harsh disturbances, only the normal nature sounds of birds, and an occasional sound of a tiny bell, a little giggle, or the leaves rustling from above.

Her mind drifted, as she sat down and leaned back against a very large boulder. She closed her eyes and breathed in deeply. The air was filled with the scent of flowers and herbs and other plants that grew about. The breeze seemed to pacify her even more as her thoughts began to wander to far off places. This deep meditation was suddenly interrupted, by strange sounds of clinking and shuffling, and tiny grunts. Jilla sat very still, trying to figure out the direction of the noise. Again she heard clinking, shuffling, and this time, a little snort! It was coming from behind the boulder!

Getting on her hands and knees, she slowly, and carefully crawled to the other side of the large rock. There she found a very curious sight! Two little elves were squatting in front of a brass bowl. One was dressed in a brown pair of breeches, with a dark green shirt, a tiny vest and boots. He wore a rather smart-looking hat upon his head. It sported a fine, red feather. The other was dressed identically, except his shirt was pale green, and his fine feather was blue in color. Their faces even looked identical! They appeared to be handling a very strange looking substance. It was light green in color, but she couldn’t tell if it was liquid, like a pudding or soup, or if it was something more solid, like bread dough. She didn’t think it was food, for neither of them was putting it up to their mouths. It was confusing, for sometimes it looked quite solid, and then at other times, it was quite liquid in appearance! They just grabbed chunks of it, held it and played with it.

She moved a bit closer to get a better look. The elves were so involved in their play, that they didn’t notice that they were being watched. The elf closest to her grabbed a very large handful, and just held it over the bowl. In a matter of seconds, it appeared to melt in his little hand and ooze between his fingers, back into the bowl again. As this was happening, the other little elf snorted and chuckled, and reached for the thick stream, grabbed it, and snapped it off! “How,” Jillandra wondered, “is it possible to snap something that is liquid, into two pieces?”

This surprised her so, that she made a little gasp. Both elves turned toward her. Their eyes grew quite large, as they just stared. Jilla hoped that they weren’t angry. She had often heard tales of fairies and elfin getting quite angry if watched or interrupted at work or play. She was hoping that these were, indeed, just tales, with little truth to them.

Finally, the elfin with the blue-feathered cap spoke. “Oh…Oh….’tis you, is it?”

The other elfin then spoke, “Yes, yes….”tis you, is it?”

"What strange little men,” Jilla thought. “Why, yes,” she replied, “It is me! I am so very sorry. I did not mean to interrupt you!”

“Oh, yes…’tis alright, yes, ‘tis alright,” said the blue-feathered elfin.

“Yes, yes, tis alright, yes, tis alright,” echoed the red-feathered elfin.

Jilla giggled, and the two little men went back to their play. Finally, her curiosity got the best of her. “Pardon, “ she whispered. “What do you have in the bowl?”

They both stopped and looked up. “In the bowl?” they said, at the same time.

“Yes,” said Jilla. “What is it that you are holding in your hands.”

“Oh, my…my, my,” said the red-feathered elf. “She doesn’t know about ‘the stuff’!”

“Yes, oh my…my, my,” repeated the blue-feathered elf. “She doesn’t know about ‘the stuff’!”

Jilla giggled again.

“You are Jillandra, Eef’s friend, true?” asked the red-feathered elf.

“Yes, you are Jillandra, Eef’s friend, true?” repeated the blue-feathered elf.

“Why yes, I am,” she replied. “And who might you two be?”

“Well,” said, the blue-feathered elf, “I would be called Tulo!”

“Yes,” agreed the red-feathered elf, “he would be called Tulo! And I would be called Tebi.”

“Yes,” chimed in Tulo. “He would be called Tebi! “We are a matched set!”

“Well! How do you do!” said Jilla, laughing. “A matched set…yes, I see you are twins, aren’t you?”

“Yes,” said Tulo. “We are an identical matched set.”

“Yes,” agreed Tebi. “We are an identical matched set.”

They doffed their splendid hats and bowed deeply. Jilla nodded in return. They weren’t angry, much to her relief, and once the introductions had finished, the two elfins squatted back at the bowl and continued playing. Tulo glanced up and saw that Jillandra was fascinated with ‘the stuff’ and invited her to plunge her finger into the bowl of goop. Eagerly she jabbed her finger in, but to her surprise, it wouldn’t penetrate the surface. It was as if it had harden on top! She tried again. It was so hard, that she could tap her finger on it.

“Place your finger in again, but this, time just lay it on top,” instructed Tebi.

“Yes, yes, lay your finger on top,” said Tulo.

The girl followed their instruction and to her amazement, her finger, and then her whole hand began to slowly sink down into the bowl. The ‘stuff’ was very cool, and pleasant to the touch. She then tried to quickly pull her hand out, but the ‘stuff’ had surrounded it and she ended up liftng the entire bowl off the ground! “Slowly,” reminded Tulo.

“Yes, slowly,” repeated Tebi.

Once the ‘stuff’ had released her hand, she was instructed to grab a hearty handful and simply hold it over the bowl. She did as she was told. As she dug her fingers in, it crumbled into large chunks. She managed to get a good handful and left the clumps in the palm of her hand, over the bowl. Right before her eyes, the crumbly substance appeared to melt into liquid and ooze between her fingers and into the bowl. She tapped the mass, and although it looked like liquid, it felt hard. It was truly the most mystifying thing that she had ever seen!
